Better Than the 250Ti........
Many think of me as a mad scientist when it comes to building custom stereo speakers, take a look at my latest monster!
The short prelude is several pairs of 240Ti’s were taking a long time to mate up with happy new owners. Rather than take another millennium to sell the very last pair, I sat down with my friendly speaker designing software.....The end result is this active-passive 5-way JBL hybrid driven by three amplifiers pushing over 1200 total watt and 114dBs !
JBL Drivers used in this system:
052Ti, 104H, 2118H, 2214H-1 & LE14H-1
Both low frequency drivers are crossed over using an external active network along with being directly driven with dedicated amplifiers while the 3-way passive 250Ti BQ runs on another supply.
Three sets of heavy duty gold plated 5-way binding posts with a free spinning ferrule provide positive lock-up on 8mm spades or 8awg bare wire and also accept banana plugs.
259 strands of 36 gauge (12awg) feeds the LE14H-1
168 strands of 36 gauge (14awg) feeds the 2214H-1
105 strands of 36 gauge (16awg) feeds the passive 250Ti BQ
The stock 240Ti cabinets were heavily modified for low frequency duty while custom built enclosures were constructed for the 250Ti BQ top end.
The LE14H-1 is used as a high order subwoofer much like the Fosgate Audionics FS400 which used this very same JBL driver. With EQ this sub is flat down to 30Hz at 114dB with only 1.5dB of ripple! The -3dB of 25Hz is where this custom 5-way really beats out the stock 250Ti .......
The 2214H-1 rolls in at 60Hz and carries the ball up to 350Hz where the passive network jumps in on a 12dB octave slope.
The 250Ti BQ passive network cross points are 1.2 kHz & 5.5 kHz and were constructed with Jensen air gap inductors, Mills non-inductive resistors and Solen metalized polypropylene capacitors while sporting the same attenuation switches.
When compared side by side to my early version 250Ti, this hybrid edged out the stock passive system primarily in the bottom end. The active set-up of the hybrid also allows for balancing the system to personal preferences which is another excellent bonus!
BTW: Yes, I can upgrade your JBL L100T3, L7, XPL and 250Ti networks just ask!
